BOOK 1:
THE AURA STONES
Five years have passed since the fateful day when a young whale calf and a baby girl came ashore to a foreign land with their whale pod. As the sun rises over the eastern coast of Centros, the largest of the 7 Lands, Billy and Nelly, an inseparable pair, raised as brother and sister, enjoy the beach, ocean and marvels of nature as their playground.
Typical of mornings, Billy - still not fully grown - lazily floats on the water's surface, his eyes half-closed. Nelly is swimming around him, nudging him playfully. They are both about 6 years old.
NELLY: "Wake up, sleepy head! We've got treasures to find! You snooze, you lose!"
BILLY (grumbling): "Just five more minutes, Nelly...I'm still dreaming about swimming in a sea of jelly beans and jelly fish."
Their mornings often begin with a deep dive, exploring the secrets of the ocean. On this day, Nelly and Billy dive into the clear blue water, their aura stones glowing faintly. They swim towards a sunken shipwreck, with curiosity in their eyes. Many battles have taken place across these lands, leading to a lot of hunting opportunities for all kinds of scavengers, including this dynamic duo.
NELLY: "Look, Billy! I think I see something shiny!"
BILLY: "Race you to it!"
Nelly gets there first - she is a fast swimmer! They discover a treasure chest partially buried in the sand, working in tandem to open it, revealing ancient coins and artifacts.
NELLY: "Wow, look at all these coins! We struck gold today!"
BILLY [with a concerned look]: "I wonder how this all got here? Do you think it was pirates? It looks like there was some kind of battle that took place here."
Back at their new home village in Centros, Nelly and Billy play their favorite game - Tire Swing. Tire Swing is a Whale favorite, and one that they generally dominate in when up against other sea creatures, due to their size and smooth moves. Billy uses his tail to flick the ball towards the tire, which hangs from a tree branch over the water.
NELLY: "Nice shot, Billy! You're getting better every day. Maybe you will qualify for this year’s Sea Games whale squad!"
BILLY: "I dunno Nellie, I still can't even beat you. I mean - sorry, you’re so good, and I just - well, you’re not a whale and all. It’s just that - you are too quick! Plus, I don’t think the current team will accept me. I’m not ready."
NELLY: “Yeah, well maybe they’ll change the rules and I’ll be able to play with you guys. Stay positive my brother, you can do anything that you set your big heart to!”
Billy & Nelly are resting on the beach, being silly and laughing together as they always do. Nelly mimics the sonorous whale sounds which she has grown up with, making Billy chuckle.
NELLY (mocking whale sounds): "Look at me, I'm a big, blue whale!"
BILLY (laughing): "If only Momma Isis and the other whales could hear you now! I think your tunes are better than mine!”
NELLY: “No way Billy Jean! You’ve got the voice of an angel.”
BILLY (mocking Michael Jackson from the song Billy Jean): “Heh heeh! She said, I am the one.”
When the sun goes down, the adventures for this dynamic duo don’t stop. Nelly and Billy decide to explore an underwater cave that has cenotes. Nelly ventures deeper in, with Billy following hesitantly.
BILLY: "Nelly, are you sure we should go in there?"
NELLY: "Don't worry, Billy. We've got our stones. They always guide and protect us."
Isis watches over Nelly and Billy from a distance, her expression one of concern. She speaks to another adult whale named Mogo from the pod.
ISIS: "They take too many risks. He is just like his father, and she has no fear. I'm worried something might happen one day."
MOGO: "They are young and brave, Isis. The Sea Gods will protect them. But you are right, they may need a little support and caution once in a while. Perhaps having them train with the Tire Swing team can give them some structure."
Night fall brings lucid dreams to the little ones, who are both sensitive to visions, premonitions and oftentimes painful memories. Nelly likes to sleep in a little hammock in her tire swing under a tree & sea house that her and Billy constructed from materials that they recovered in various shipwrecks. On this night, her face contorted in fear as she had a recurring nightmare where she sees pirates attacking an island, something that was buried deep in her subconscious from her early days as an infant on Whale Island.
NELLY (in her sleep): “No, no, mamma don’t go. Help me Mother Isis. Help me Billy!”
Nelly wakes up with the morning sun, breathing heavily and tears in her eyes. She looks over to see Billy still sleeping, half-submerged in the water.
NELLY (yelling): "Brother, wake up! I had the pirate nightmare again! I think the pirates are coming."
BILLY (groggy): "Huh? Nelly, what's wrong? Go back to sleep. You are safe now. That is in the past."
Like humans, whales cannot survive and breathe under water. So they must learn to stay half-awake to avoid drowning when they sleep. Nelly learned this skill as well, and teaches Billy how to maintain partial awareness while floating in the water, even while asleep.
NELLY: "You have to stay half-awake, Billy. It's how the whales sleep and stay safe. I am always here for you, but it’s still a skill that you have to master for your own safety."
BILLY: "I'll try, Nelly. I just get so tired and really love my slumber. Plus those dreams are like movies - I hate to cut them off! Thanks for looking out for me Sis."
Upon encouragement of Mogo, one of the coaches of the Whale Pod’s Tire Swing team, Billy shows up to practice one day, but can’t keep up with the pace of play. The other whales are a little older, faster and stronger. Billy feels alone, looking sad and distant. The older whales on the team start to mock him. Billy's struggle with his past continues, as he often feels the weight of his father's absence.
MOBY (Team Captain): "Look at him, he can't even swim straight! No wonder his dad got captured."
BILLY (thinking and too shy to speak up for himself): "I'll show them one day...I'll be strong like my dad."
Nelly is not allowed to participate in official Whale practices, but hears about what happened, and approaches Billy after practice, offering a comforting smile and a hug.
NELLY: "Don't listen to them, Billy. You're the bravest whale I know. If they only saw your moves when we practice, and how clever you are during our adventures! Give it time, for you to get into shape."
BILLY (softly): "Thanks, Nelly. I don't know what I'd do without you. You always have my tail."
Nelly and Billy get back out to their own private Tire Swing court, with renewed energy and joy. When the two of them are together, anything seems possible. Isis watches from a distance, a small smile on her face. Through their adventures and struggles, their bond grows stronger, promising a future filled with success and love.
ISIS (thinking): "They will be okay. Together, they can face anything."
As the sun sets over the West side of Centros, the friends swim over to their lookout point. Side by side, watching the horizon, they imagine and meditate on the adventures to come.
NELLY: "What do you think tomorrow will bring, Billy?"
BILLY: "Progress! More fun, more games and more treasures. And we’ll take on the world together Nelly. I promise you one day, I will help you find your parents - and we will rescue my dad as well."
NELLY: "I know Billy. I trust you. I am just happy that we have each other."
